| Build a "Simple One" |
| Simple tools: a saw and sanding sticks, CA glue, waxed paper, masking tape, pins, and some balsa sticks.
Start by gluing the front and rear spars in place, then add the lower ribs.
Glue on the main spar and then make the rear ribs from pieces of scrap.
| Add the top ribs.
Cut the rear ribs down to size and then sand in the proper bevel.
If you have some extra time, make a few more to get really good at it. I used a small plastic block plane and a sanding stick to round off the leading edge.

| Now to cover the silly thing: 2 rolls of covering, razor blades, a heat gun and small iron.
Attach the film to the flat bottom and notch the corners as shown.
Attach the film to the sides of the wing and trim the excess.
| Cover the top like you did the bottom.
A small piece of scrap takes care of the wingtip.
Because I wanted to join my wings, I sanded a bevel in the edges of the panels (but it's impossible to see this here).
| I glued 2 short pieces of carbon fiber to the front and back of the main spar, put glue on the inside surface, and then joined the panels. I glued around the outside of the wing with medium CA glue.
I didn't know how the thing would turn out so I didn't do any fancy planning, but since the wing looked viable, I went ahead and built a plane for it. It flies GREAT. I'm going to see about making some control surfaces for the silly thing and then adding radio control to it....

| This article was posted Dec. 1, 2009. We are currently in search of volunteers who want to build a wing panel and then cover it this Saturday, Dec 5, 2009.
There is no charge of any sort for this (that's right, this is FREE!!), and we supply all tools, materials, etc. The purpose of the test is to have normal people try out the instructions, plans and directions.
We expect that it will take approximately 1 hour to build a panel and another hour or so to cover it. If you're not happy with how yours turned out there is plenty of time to make another one (also at no charge).
However, at least for this first session we are limiting participation to those currently over 18 years of age. We further reserve the right to un-include (yes, I am a fan of Orwell) people who prove to be disruptive or unduly silly (yes, also a fan of Monty Python), or in any other way un-suitable (this determination will be made at our sole discretion and there is no appeal).
If you are still interested, please email us at info@bigapplehobbies.com and we will email you back the schedule as soon as we have it all figured out (:-)
